How to Identify Real Pearls from a Mineralogical Perspective

Pearls are formed when mollusks secrete layers of nacre, a natural biomineral composed primarily of calcium carbonate crystals bound by organic proteins. Over time, these microscopic layers accumulate to create the luminous structure we recognize as a pearl.

From a mineralogical standpoint, distinguishing genuine pearls from imitations involves observing the subtle biological growth patterns embedded within this layered nacre structure.

Surface Structure

When examined under a 10× magnifying lens, genuine pearls often reveal delicate nacre growth lines and microscopic undulations. These patterns result from the gradual deposition of nacre layers during pearl formation inside the mollusk.

Imitation pearls—commonly made from glass beads, plastic beads, or shell beads coated with artificial luster—typically display a much smoother and more uniform surface, lacking the subtle organic irregularities found in genuine pearls.

Optical Effect

The luster of a genuine pearl possesses a distinctive depth and inner glow.

This effect occurs because light penetrates the nacre layers and undergoes interference and diffraction between microscopic aragonite platelets, producing the multidimensional radiance often referred to as “orient.”

In contrast, imitation pearls usually reflect light primarily from their outer coating, resulting in a flatter and more superficial shine.

Although some high-quality imitation pearls can partially mimic pearl luster, they generally lack the complex internal light interaction characteristic of genuine nacre.

Touch Test

Nacre, composed largely of calcium carbonate crystals, conducts heat differently from most plastics.

As a result, genuine pearls often feel cool to the touch when first held, gradually warming as they adjust to body temperature.

Imitation pearls—especially those made from plastic—typically feel closer to room temperature from the start and lack this distinctive thermal response.
