Is moissanite a real gemstone?

Yes. Moissanite is a genuine gemstone — silicon carbide — first discovered in a meteor crater in 1893. The moissanite in LUMINA VOW rings is laboratory-grown to the same chemical and optical properties as naturally occurring moissanite. It is not cubic zirconia, not glass, and not a diamond simulant. It is its own gemstone, with its own distinct optical properties.

Does moissanite look like a diamond?

Moissanite is often compared to diamond, but it actually outperforms diamond in fire and brilliance. Its refractive index (2.65) is higher than diamond (2.42), which means it produces more colorful light dispersion — what jewelers call "fire." In direct sunlight or under event lighting, moissanite is noticeably more brilliant than a diamond of equivalent size. The difference is most visible in larger stones.

What does D Color VVS1 mean?

D Color is the highest color grade available — completely colorless, with no yellow or gray tint. VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included 1) is the second-highest clarity grade, meaning the stone has no inclusions visible to the naked eye and only minute inclusions detectable under 10x magnification. Together, D Color VVS1 represents the finest optical quality available in moissanite.

What is a GRA Certificate?

The GRA (Gemological Research Association) Certificate is an authentication document confirming the moissanite in this ring meets D Color VVS1 specifications. Every LUMINA VOW moissanite ring ships with a GRA Certificate included in the package.

Will the silver tarnish over time?

S925 sterling silver can tarnish with prolonged exposure to moisture, chemicals, and air. The rings in this collection are electroplated with rhodium (silver finish) or 18K gold (gold finish), which significantly slows tarnishing. To maintain the finish: put the ring on after applying perfume and lotion, remove before swimming or cleaning, and store in the provided jewelry box when not wearing. With proper care, the finish typically lasts 1-2 years of daily wear before replating may be needed.

Can I wear this ring every day?

Yes. Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale — harder than any gemstone except diamond (10). It will not scratch, chip, or cloud under normal daily wear conditions. How do I choose the right ring size?

The most accurate method: wrap a strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimeters, and divide by 3.14 to get your diameter, then compare to a standard ring size chart. If you are between sizes, size up — rings can be resized down more easily than up. For rings with full pavé bands (stones around the entire band), sizing adjustments are more limited, so accurate measurement is especially important. Does moissanite pass a diamond tester?

Most traditional diamond testers test thermal conductivity — and moissanite conducts heat similarly to diamond, so it often reads as diamond on these testers. Advanced testers that test electrical conductivity can distinguish between the two. If you want to verify your stone is moissanite (not diamond), the GRA Certificate and the laser inscription on the stone's girdle provide definitive confirmation.
